Arab Women are told that men’s controlling behavior is all for love. It’s a good thing!
by owning you and claiming you as his and putting you in his castle and never allowing you to go out with his permission and without clothing that covers your entire body because every inch of your body ultimately belongs to him at the end of the night. This is how men naturally love!
And if he beats you, he’s doing it for the greater good!
Arabs call it “jealousy”, and they tell women that the men who love them will naturally feel jealous over them. A man who is not jealous over “his” women is a pimp.
“How can you let your sister/wife go out wearing something like that? Don’t you have any jealousy over what is forbidden to others?” A man would ask another.
“What is forbidden to others,” is a term used to refer to women here. We are belongings. Things.
How can we have expectations of human rights from a society that has not yet acknowledged our humanity? A society that thinks that we are not complete beings unless we’re under someone’s ownership? That your personhood only exists once you become a wife to a man?
So here’s a thought…
Arab women should start refusing the idea of marriage until the day Arab states start acknowledging the fact that we are the foundation, and that we are valuable citizens who are entitled to all the freedoms and rights that men have and more. We deserve respect.
Enough with this humiliation.
